On Birth

Standard

I’ve been trying to find some books on birth that are appropriate for 4-year olds. I recently checked out a book at the library called My Mom’s Having a Baby. It’s aimed at children 4-6 years old. Super, Owen is 4. Great book. I was so glad I read the book on my own first. Does a 4 year old REALLY need to know how a baby is made? I don’t think so. I think it would be different if he was 10 and able to grasp the details, but wow. I couldn’t even read this book in its entirety without turning beet red.

So, on to more research. I found this lovely book on a parenting website that someone had highly recommended, especially if you are considering a home birth. Welcome With Love is told by the perspective of a brother waiting for his new sibling to be born. It’s beautifully illustrated and written so it’s not too graphic. Gives a great overview of the home birth experience. LOVE IT.

I’m driving to the Bay Area tomorrow to visit my family. My sis, Kat, is visiting from Germany with her hubby, Richard for a month. I haven’t seen them in a year, so we are all looking forward to a big family reunion! We are also celebrating my niece, Jianna’s 2nd birthday! Woo!

I’ll be back next week. Hope everyone has a fantastic rest of the week and weekend!

About Erin

I'm a mom to the sweetest little boys ever, Owen & Colin. Owen was born in April of 2007 after 22 hours of active labor in a hospital. Love him more than life. Knowing I didn't feel another hospital birth was right for me, Colin was born at home surrounded by our 2 midwives and our little family. I've been married to my hubs for 7 years. We met in 1997 in an AOL Chatroom...the rest is history. I'm crazy. I'm funny. I am socially awkward. This is my life.

  1. Soulemama was talking about that book in her blog! She is expecting her 5th child and is due sometime this month I believe. I can’t wait to hear all about your home birth. I’ve never actually known anyone personally who has done it. I would love to do it with my next baby!

  2. It’s such a FANTASTIC book. Owen and I have already read it several times and the pictures are beautiful. Not too scary, not too much information, but just enough so he gets the basics of where the baby will come from. (I don’t think he needs to know at 4 how the baby got there….he thinks it’s from my “cranky pills” aka fertility drugs. Good enough for now.) 🙂
I will def let you know. Wanna come be my doula??
